A letter from Abby: her 2024 plans

Dear Friends,

When I first joined  ICS over 13 years ago I had no idea what a major part of my life it would become. Every day I’m reminded of what a unique place it is thanks to the wonderful people that come together to create hospitable, warm and inclusive spaces for us all.

What has always drawn me to ICS is the thoughtful and kind way we band together to take care of each other when we need it most. Whether it's our living skills trainers working diligently to help one of our clients find a home, or one of our job coaches working alongside someone at our garden program, teaching them the skills needed to work. The overwhelming feeling at ICS is one of the steadfast belief that our individual humanity is to be honored, cared for and embraced by a community of people who believe each of us are worthy.

Little did I know 13 years ago that 2023 would end up being the year that the tables would turn for me and I would be the one receiving the kind of care I so proudly worked with our team to offer. Earlier this year I unexpectedly lost both my parents in quick succession and my older sister is currently battling metastatic breast cancer.  As Executive Director I’ve become accustomed to being the person who has helped others figure out big problems, but this past year I’ve been so touched by our staff, clients and board members who have stepped up to help me figure out some of the most challenging problems that come with immense loss. One of the things our team has helped me realize is that rest is essential to continue on in doing the work I love so much. With the support of our amazing board and team, I have decided to take a sabbatical starting in January 2024, and my plan is to return next year in January 2025. Making this decision was not easy as I love the work I do and the passion I have for disability justice has only grown with time. However, the loving community we have at ICS has been encouraging of me taking the time to grieve and heal and for that I am immeasurably grateful.

Keira Pelletier, ICS’ Director of Strategy will be stepping in as Interim Executive Director while I am away. Keira has been a part of ICS for over eight years and is one of the most thoughtful and talented leaders I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from. I’m excited for ICS to benefit from her kind and inclusive leadership.

I will be staying connected to ICS while I’m on sabbatical and look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things you’ll all do as the work continues on to build an inclusive community for us all. Thank you for being a part of our community- it’s such an honor to be a part of it with you.
Warmly,
Abby
